Remember - Week 2
Week 2 Recap:
Communion, Prayer, and Submission: Keys to an Abundant Life
In our journey through the readings this week, we find ourselves drawing closer to the pivotal moment of the cross. There's a sense of urgency in the air, a stirring of anticipation among the disciples. As we delve into Luke chapter 22, we encounter a profound message from Jesus—one that resonates deeply with our hearts today.
The passage opens with a scene of the disciples jostling for position, vying for greatness in the kingdom of God. Yet, amidst their ambitious aspirations, Jesus redirects their focus. He speaks of a cup to be drank and a baptism of fire to be undergone, intimating the trials that lie ahead. But amidst these foreboding words, there's a glimmer of hope, a call to connection with Him.
Communion, symbolized by the Lord's Supper, takes center stage in the narrative. Jesus shares a poignant moment with His disciples, expressing His fervent desire to partake in the Passover meal before His impending suffering. He institutes the practice of communion, urging them to remember Him through the breaking of bread and the sharing of the cup. In these simple yet profound acts, He reveals His heart's longing and His unwavering promise of a kingdom to come.
But nestled within this sacred meal is a sobering reminder of betrayal. Even as Jesus extends the cup of fellowship, the shadow of betrayal looms large. Yet, in the face of impending betrayal, Jesus models a life of communion and submission. He invites His disciples—and us—to partake in a deeper intimacy, both with God and with one another.
Communion, often regarded as a church ritual, transcends mere symbolism. It embodies the essence of intimacy—a tangible connection with the divine. As we partake in the bread and the cup, we are reminded of Christ's sacrificial love, His body broken and His blood shed for us. It is a physical and spiritual communion, a reminder of our identity as members of God's family.
Moreover, communion serves as a call to action—a commission to embody the presence of Christ in the world. Through our prayers, our actions, and our relationships, we become the tangible manifestation of God's love and grace. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, extending His love to a broken and hurting world.
Yet, communion alone is not enough. It must be accompanied by prayer and submission to the will of God. Prayer, Jesus reminds us, is our safeguard against temptation. In the battleground of our hearts, prayer fortifies our resolve and aligns our will with God's. It is through prayer that we tap into the power of God's Spirit, enabling us to resist temptation and walk in obedience.
Submission, likewise, is essential for experiencing the abundant life Christ offers. It requires surrendering our desires, our ambitions, and our will to God's perfect plan. It is a daily surrender, a continual laying down of self in pursuit of God's purposes. In submission, we find true freedom—a freedom that comes from aligning our lives with God's will.
As we reflect on these truths, let us consider the implications for our lives. What would it look like to prioritize communion, prayer, and submission in our daily walk with God? How might our lives be transformed if we truly embraced these disciplines?
Let us commit ourselves to a life of communion, prayer, and submission—a life marked by intimacy with God, resilience in the face of temptation, and obedience to His will. May we be vessels of His love and agents of His kingdom, bringing hope and healing to a world in need.
In communion, prayer, and submission, we discover the keys to an abundant life—a life lived in fellowship with our Creator and Savior, Jesus Christ.
